The Monster Runner Award

The Monster Runner Award is designed to celebrate the runners in our community who excel in race finishes, overcome personal challenges, run personal bests, contribute to a better life for those around them, and go far beyond their comfort zone to find something special within.

Shelley York

This month’s Monster Runner, Shelley York is a local girl who started running as an adult and got hooked very quickly. Shelley competed in soccer and gymnastics at Thurston High School, and began running in 2003 on a treadmill at lunch, as part of her training program at work. By the following summer, Shelley was a full-fledged runner, and taking on races from 5Ks to the marathon. Most recently, at last month’s Turkey Stuffer, she established a new PR for 5K, with her 21:44 clocking and currently has a marathon best of 3:36:44 (set at Napa Valley). In her half-decade as a runner, Shelley’s already logged 7 marathon finishes, including Portland, Eugene, Seattle, San Francisco, and Seafair, with an 8th coming later this month (and a goal of running 3:30).

As a member of the Energy Management Services team at EWEB, Shelley spends her days tackling challenges of energy conservation in our community. Just last month, Shelley also took on the challenge of serving as the race director for the 2nd Annual Run To Stay Warm in Eugene. Through her efforts with the race, Shelley helped to raise an incredible $12,000 for the Customer Care program, which assists families who struggle to pay their winter heating bills. Based on the success of the first two years of the event, it’s clear that Shelley’s contributing to the establishment of a mainstay on the race calendar, with a focus on community service.

While she admits that she’s ultra-competitive, Shelley really enjoys the camaraderie of running with friends, the inherent personal challenges and the ability to reflect that running brings. Shelley’s even been able to get her sisters Courtney and Jessica into running – these days they can all be seen heading to a race with Jock Jams blasting in the car. The advice she gave her sisters and would give to anyone as they start running: just focus on getting through the first few weeks, and talk to friends for advice and someone to run with. In fact, the ability to share the passion for running is one of the things that has kept Shelley close to her roots in the Eugene/Springfield area over the years – she likes the health-mindedness of the community and enjoys seeing people on routine runs that keep people grounded and connected.

Whether behind the scene as a race director, working for a healthier environment, or out there gutting it out in a race, Shelley’s committed to being a part of a positive experience for herself and all those around her.
